Pioneer Introduces 2012 Drum Majors

Jessie Marsala

Hello! My name is Jessie Marsala. I’m 18 years old and reside in Naperville, Illinois. I am a senior at Metea Valley High School in Aurora. I first gained interest in music when I was 5 years old. Inspired by my Aunt Linda, I started taking piano lessons and continue to take them. In 6th grade, I found my true passion. It’s percussion.

During my high school years, I have been involved with Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Steel Band, Percussion Ensemble and Pep Band. Also, I have been an active participant in TRI-M and Key Club. I have been  on my school’s Homecoming Court and also was recently crowned Miss Metea Valley High school by my peers and teachers! My peers agree with me that my work ethic and motivation towards achieving my goals are my academic strong suits.

In the fall, I plan to study Business Management and Leadership in order to pursue my dream job; working for Drum Corps International.

My favorite show is the Bands of America show because just two years ago, I was a camper just like the kids watching in the stands. I realized that if you work hard enough and really set your mind to something, anything is possible.

I am honored to say that I have been selected to be a Pioneer Drum Major for the 2012 season. I will be accompanied by Josh Lloyd. Last year was my first year with the corps. I was part of the front ensemble and played Vibraphone. Luckily, Josh and I both have four more seasons to march together! I have always wanted to inspire others by teaching them about my biggest passion in life just like how my music teachers motivated me and Pioneer has the perfect atmosphere to let me share my passion. I love Pioneer because of the corps’ history and rich traditions. I'm thrilled to be going on tour again with Pioneer and I look forward to getting “Better Every Day!” I’m known as a very friendly person so if you see me on tour, please come and says hi!

Joshua Lloyd

Hello my name is Joshua Lloyd (aka “Patty McShamrocks”).

I was born in Anchorage Alaska while my father was stationed there when serving in the US Air Force. I moved to Wisconsin (where my parents are originally from) when I was 3. I lived in the Waukesha area until I was 5 and then moved to Oshkosh. As long as I can remember I enjoyed meeting people and making new friends. In Elementary School I participated in Cub Scouts and crossed over into Boy Scouts. In 6th grade I joined band and immediately fell in love with being a musician and performer. I have played numerous instruments to include the Trumpet, Alto Saxophone, Percussion, Baritone, French Horn, Mellophone and Flugle Horn. In Middle School I enjoyed learning various genres of music to include jazz & classical. I performed in the debut & second year of the Oshkosh Philharmonia.

In High School I expanded my music experience by playing in various bands, jazz band as well as private lessons. At the end of my sophomore year, inspired by my father, I was introduced to Drum & Bugle Corps and joined the Pioneer. I am now in my 3rd year with the Pioneer and the goal I set my first year was to become the Drum Major until I age out. Being a Drum Major is big responsibility. It demands a person with character and leadership abilities which I believe I have and will grow on. Participating with the Pioneer has taught me push myself to limits I did not think I was capable of achieving.

I look forward to the challenge of being Drum Major. It is a great opportunity to be able to work with the corps members and the staff. I plan on making this and the following years as successful as possible by ensuring the safety and the fun experience for every member. Pioneer has been a life changing experience and I will work every day making sure that every member will experience the same impact in their life. As Drum Major I will lead each member to live by the Pioneer motto, “Better Every Day”.
